So we spent this amazing day at a park called Xel-Ha. We were able to visit as a "VIP" with our Hotel Xcaret All Fun Inclusive.

Short story – it’s an ocean front and fresh water ecological park. Where you can snorkel, swim, dive, water slides, bird flight attractions and more.

I had a water proof case so of course we were taking my phone! We were still new at the whole go pro experience and it just seemed easier. I was also a little uneasy about leaving the resort without a phone, because I would normally go anywhere with my phone at home, so why not in Mexico.

We got some amazing underwater footage. We went on a sea trek. We went to all the "Xelfie" stations and took some amazing pictures. We were cave snorkeling, rafting under arbor trees, and all of these beautiful things.

IRREPLACEABLE photos and videos.

This is the story of how I lost my phone in Mexico.

Problem 1: mindfulness

So after a day full of sun, swimming, food, and unlimited included drinks. You can imagine why it was easy for me to lose it.

When we left the bus they told me to check for my stuff, but I was so confident that it stayed in my bag and pockets, that I didn’t check.

Problem 2: no convenient zipped bag

The first trip to the Hotel and Parks left me with things I wish I would have thought of! Such as – a bag that ZIPS (like a small travel bag to and from parks) with enough space for our stuff.

We had big back packs and things that we brought with us (because we are carry on travelers only.)

But those were to large to go back and forth.

We used the cute bag they gave us, and we had pockets, but again – ZIPS.

Problem 3: confusion and the unknown

So the bus we went on, was supposed to be a specific PINK bus, but it was full. So they loaded us to a second bus. Again, being tired, I didn’t particularly know what color the bus was, or what number it had on it to identify it.

Problem 4: timing

It took us leaving the bus, returning to the room, getting ready for dinner, then back down to dinner, then back to the room again: to realize- my phone is nowhere to be found. It's easy to get lost in the vacation. It's one my favorite things about Mexico. I don’t normally like having my phone tied to me. And we often did not bring it to dinner with us so that we could just spend time together no devices.

By the time I realize its gone, its too late to figure it out and most of the staff that ran the buses for the day, are gone.

XCaret Hotel Saves the DAY:

So here we are, the cards are stacked against me – and my phone is likely gone forever. My list of problems does NOT leave me hope.

So I go to the concierge station to try to find the first person that can help me. They had me wait in the comfortable entrance area. And let me tell you, spending time in that area, is always amazing. The smells and beauty in just the "lobby" leaves you peaceful. I've never been so calm and so upset at the same time.

We have a few people back and forth that talk to us, a few that have clipboards and a few that just want to make us laugh and entertain us. Seriously guys, my concierge that checked me in 3 days ago asked me "by name" if I was ok, and if he could help at all. He stayed and spoke with me and my husband for a while even though it was the end of his shift. He saw use as he walked out and wanted to make sure we were ok.

This place really means it when they call you Familia! Shout out to Xcaret Eduardo! Mi amigo thank you for being awesome.

Anyway back to the phone. Clipboard, service, and more. We even had fresh fruit popsicles while we waited. Eventually they got everything they could from me. Let me know that they offices were closed but that they would check on things for me as soon as possible. The next morning on to breakfast, no word on the phone. Although they did call me to tell me that they were still waiting.

Around lunch, we were heading out to one of the parks in the circuit so I wanted to check in. They told me they found the bus, and they think they found my phone. They were going to bring it when the group returned from today's tours.

Later that evening we met them in the lobby, they were smiling with their clipboard and my phone. They said "we saw your beautiful faces on the front screen, and knew this was your phone. We are so sorry this took so long." I was in absolute aww. I really went the whole time thinking I would have lost everything. I had my phone in less than 48 hours. I was so mad at myself for not JUST CHECKING! But this is one of the many times I was impressed with service. I also learned a new lesson that I hope to share.

Lesson 1: Always check. Always double check. Not just your seat, under and next to your seat. Trust that your body is tired and you WILL forget stuff.

Lesson 2: Have a bag that is smaller. Not just one you bring and use as a suitcase. But bring a small bag that you can roll a towel and a few things in. Something that zips. Water resistant with all the activities involved is probably helpful too. There were quite a few times the sink was wet or the floor is where I had to set my bag. Water resistant so your items don’t get wet.

Lesson 3: Decide whether its important for you to bring your phone or a camera. Be willing to lose it. And back up to a cloud each night JUST in case you do.

Lesson 4: Its vacation, be kind to yourself. You aren't perfect and things happen. Pre-planning is the best plan, but when you can't plan for everything: REMEMBER: Just stay calm, have a plan, and always reach out for help when you need it.
